Welcome to my beautiful island of Sri Lanka. The island’s proud history of over 2500 years will capture your heart and soul like no other destination. The time you spend in our island will be filled with exciting experiences and memories which will linger with you long aftern you leave these shores. “Ayubowan” (may you be blessed with long life) is Sri Lanka’s gesture of welcome and respect as palms of the hands are clasped together and accompanied by a gentle bow of the head. What may strike you most about Sri Lanka is its amazing diversity of scenery. It is possible to pass brilliant green paddy fields, sun-bronzed beaches, ruined cities, small lively villages, near desert regions, sanctuaries for wildlife in tropical ungles, and hill country tea plantations literally within hours of each other.
Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean off southeast India. Originally inhabited by the Vedda, the sland was subsequently invaded by the Sinhalese (6th century BC) and the Tamils (11th and 12th centuries Ad).The lucrative spice trade on the island was controlled successively by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders from the 12th century.
Sri Lanka became a British colony in 1798 and achieved independence in 1948. Declared a republic in 1972, the island adopted the Sinhalese name of Sri Lanka. With a population of 20 million people, Colombo is the largest city. The national capital, however, is Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, just east of Colombo.
