A Message from Heidi Leavitt, Counseling Director

The SRHS School Counseling program is an essential part of the educational process for students. This program is designed to meet students’ needs by helping them define and meet expectations in all facets of their lives – academic, social, emotional, and career and post-secondary planning.

Each student will be assigned to a counselor upon entrance to Sanborn Regional High School. Student Counseling activities are conducted on a regular and planned basis with the goal of providing students with experiences to help them grow and to reach their full potential. Counselors provide direct services to students, as well as working with parents, school staff, and members of the community.

Unless otherwise instructed in writing by a parent or guardian, services provided through the School Counseling Office will be provided to all students through self-referral, staff referral, and/or parent referral.

Important Resources

Current Events

  • On January 13th, parents of seniors can receive help from NHHEAF on their Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). NHHEAF staff will be at Sanborn to assist parents who have questions or who might have situations which require more assistance. There are only 16 slots available and they fill up quick! If you would like to sign up, slots are available from 1-5, will be filled on a first come, first serve basis and can be reserved by calling Deirdre Cotter in the Counseling office at 642-3341 x 108.
  • On January 23rd, all Juniors will participate in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Historically, folks have assumed that this exam is only used to determine acceptance into the various military branches specific careers. More recently, the counselors have learned about the tremendous amount of career exploration/interest feedback a student can receive from the exam and we have decided to use this information to kick off our Junior College Search season. (**rescheduled from 12/4!**)
  • The quarter 2 transcript snapshot for seniors is January 23rd. After the 23rd, mid-year transcripts will be sent to colleges. Counselors and administrators will start meeting with seniors who are in danger of not graduating the week of 1/27 and placing them on academic probation, if needed.
  • Parents of Freshmen and Sophomores, do you wonder what PSAT, SAT and other acronyms mean when it comes to college and career readiness? On January 27th from 6-7pm in the high school library, the school counseling team will offer an information session to help you to prepare your child for whatever path they choose after high school - college, career, or the military.
  • On January 28th, interested Sophomores will take a field trip to SST to visit their programs. SST applications are due January 31st. Students will receive field trip forms upon their return from winter break.
  • After school tutoring and study lounge is being offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays after school from 2:30-4pm. Please contact Maggie Baldoumas for more information about tutoring:
  • Please check our calendar below for upcoming events and military and college visits during the school day.

PSAT Scores

PSAT scores will be distributed to Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors the week of 12/16. Students will be recieving their scores during Advisory. Ms. Arena, Mrs. Farrar, and Mrs. McCarthy will be holding FLT on 1/9 and 1/10 to explain score reporting to students and help them understand their score. Please see the links below regarding the PSAT and score reporting. Students are highly encouraged to use Khan Academy to study and increase their scores.

Course Selection

The process will be similar to last year as students will have individual conferences with their core academic teachers to choose the course that is best for them given their interests and post-secondary plans. Once core classes are chosen, counselors will be going into classrooms to help students choose their electives. This process will be completed by the end of January. Look for a letter with your child’s course selection in the mail during the second week of Feb. Those letters will need to be returned with a parent or guardian’s signature. Please use the Program of Studies for course descriptions and the Course Offerings form for each grade to have a discussion with your child as to the best courses for them to select. It is important to remember that these are course requests and not a schedule. All elective courses are subject to interest as to whether or not they are run. Graduation requirements can be found in the Program of Studies.
