1/24/2025 Beginning of a plan:
Why write a Spy Hunter knockoff game for an ancient computer?
Two part answer: Entertainment in bringing a fortyish year old computer back to life and Spy Hunter being one of my all time favorite arcade games. After aquiring a Spy Hunter Arcade Control Panel (see MAME section), the challenge of developing a CoCo based game to use it got me to this point. My general goal is to connect the control panel to my CoCo1 to play this and other games.
How much of this game can I complete?? Being an amateur programmer (still learning assembly), the answer is - I don't know.
The current status of the game (1/5/24 Rev SPYH21) is basically a demo showing that the Road Scrolling speed is probably fast enough on a CoCo1 to be a playable game, but I still have many challenges to address:
Playable Steering and Speed control
Collision Detection and Scoring
My experience with this are algorithms that continuously calculate the distance between each object... I think need a faster solution for this game
AI for the Enemy Sprites
CoCo1 hybrid controls (Joystick and Keyboard) and connection to the Spy Hunter Arcade hardware
Sound Effects and Music
???
The code is available to anyone that is interested.
And - if you have any ideas, comments, or would like to help on this project - please contact me.
Thanks - Rich
