Reverse Worded Questions

Measurement scales that consist of both negatively and positively worded statements (reverse code the questions).

Exercise

Download a data-set here.

Step 1

At the variable view, select the variable to be reverse-coded.

At the Transform tab, select recode into different variable.

Step 2

At the recode into different variable dialogue box, select the variable and define output variable name, than click Change.

Step 3

At the recode into different variable dialogue box, Click Old and New Values. Then key in the old value and new value. Continue...

Step 3

At the variable view, drag the variable next to the variable with the original score.

Summated & Average Summated Score

Steps:

1. Select Transform Compute Variable
2. Type the variable name in the box labelled Target Variable
3. Click on parentheses to place in Numeric Expression box
4. Highlight first variable of interest and click on arrow box
5. Click on “” sign
6. Repeat (4) and (5) unless all variables of interest are placed in Numeric
7. Expression box
8. Click OK to get the summated score (skip step 7 if interested in average summated score)
9. Click on the cursor to place it after parentheses and then click slash “/” sign
10. Click on required number (the required number is total number of variables in Numeric Expression box)
11. Click OK to get the average summated score
