30 years ago, there were only 3 brands of paint. Some commonly used brands you will find in your local hardware stores like Krylon & Rustoleum.
After 1994, more European brands of paint have been brought to the USA with the purpose to manufacture "spraypaint for artists." The European paints had a higher pigment content but in the USA, cost more due to the importing costs.
These new brands of paint available at California Arts Supply are:
Montana Black high pressure spraypaint made by Montana Cans - made in Germany
MTN '94, Hardcore & WaterBased spraypaints made by Montana Colors (MTN) - made in Spain
MTN '94 is low pressure primer & paint that has a matte finish
MTN Hardcore is high pressure and has a glossy finish
MTN WaterBased is an acrylic paint that is water soluble and matches the Liquitex color palette line. It leans more toward a low pressure paint also.
Flame Blue low pressure spraypaint - made in Germany by the same company that makes Belton Molotow spraypaint.
What kind of paint is in a spraycan?
Most of the paint that is available today is all enamel based paint and is mixed a solvent. You must us a paint thinner or you will need to scrub for a long time with soap & water to get it off your skin.
The exception is Montana Colors Water-Based spraypaint that consists of an acrylic paint that matches Liquitexʻs paint system and is water-soluable. Other brands of Belton Molotov and Liquitex also make water-based spraypaints.
Whatʻs inside a spraycan is usually 30% paint, 25% solvent, and 45% of CO2 compressed air.
