Simulation education in nursing is a teaching and learning approach that uses simulated environments, scenarios, and patient actors or mannequins to replicate real-life clinical situations. This method allows nursing students to experience realistic clinical scenarios in a safe environment, and develop technical and non-technical nursing skills.
The aim of this page is to give some background into what is involved in the process of running simulated training. To develop skills as a Simulated Patient or Simulated Patient Educator, further training and practice are recommended.
Simulation Education in Healthcare1-3
Simulation Education (of any kind) can develop:
communication skills, information gathering, clarification skills, clinical reasoning, nursing knowledge & skills to assess the patient, and teamwork.
Simulating difficult-to-experience situations can help students to overcome anxiety and fear.
This can nurture a professional and friendly attitude.
Built on a History of Research
Standardized Patient refers to the consistency and accuracy of the acting behavior4 and is useful for standardized assessment. A Simulated Patient is a more flexible representation of a patient.
The history of Standardized/Simulated Patient research shows professional practice, with high-quality programs, collaboration, and accountability5
English Speaking Simulated Patient (ESSP) role-play benefits6
English communication skills and cultural sensitivity
Listening to, understanding, and adapting to real-time & dynamic interaction
Developing flexibility in trainees’ empathetic responses
Sharing reflections with peers and Simulated Patients
The Japan Association of Simulated Patients in English (JASPE) provides examples of specific medical interview questions by system7.

Debriefing & Reflection
What was good and what could be better for the Student, the Simulated Patient, and for the Scenario?
The Association of Standardized Patient Educators has a good training course including Delivering Feedback: A Workshop for Trainers and SPs9.
There are various feedback methods and debriefing tools10, for example:
Plus-Delta:
Plus: List good behaviors or actions
Delta: List behaviors or actions that could be improved or could be changed in future
GAS:
Gather: Recap simulation events
Analyze: Learner reflection and event analysis
Summarize: Review of simulation and lessons learned
