In many underserved and minority skin communities, the risk of UV-related damage is high, yet finding sunscreen suited to one’s skin tone, type, and lifestyle is difficult. Our client, Urvi Patel, recognized that individuals in many Native American and other minority communities often face two connected challenges: higher vulnerability to UV damage and limited access to products that truly match their complexion. This leaves many people without effective protection and without guidance for choosing the right products. Motivated by this gap, Urvi proposed SPFMatch, an accessible tool focused on helping people find sunscreen that meets their unique needs.
SPFMatch will support users of all skin tones, with particular attention to communities historically overlooked by the skincare industry. The application provides personalized sunscreen recommendations by considering skin tone, sensitivity, lifestyle, and user preferences. Instead of relying on trial and error or unclear marketing, users will receive guidance that helps them make informed decisions about their health. Our goal is to make the process simple, intuitive, and empowering so that users feel confident in protecting their skin.
Through the development of SPFMatch in Comp 523, we have improved not only our technical abilities but also our collaboration, communication, and planning skills. Throughout the process, we have kept the end user at the center of our decisions. Each feature is evaluated by asking, “How will this help the user?” We believe we are not simply building software. We are creating a tool that can improve health outcomes and make real, positive change by helping people access the protection they deserve.
