SLOW SYSTEMS: Exploring tangible musical interfaces inspired by analogue technologies

This workshop invites attendees to explore digital metaphors of century-old analogue musical systems, while contemplating the concept of 'Slow Technology' as a catalyst for creative processes. We will focus on two tangible, digital musical instruments: one modelled on reel-to-reel tape and one modelled on optical sound technology. Taking a hands-on approach, we will investigate playful, cyclical approaches to recording, playback and re-sampling. Throughout this session we will collectively engage with and respond to interesting imperfections and peculiar system behaviours that might spark new creative lines of inquiry.

If you are interested in attending this workshop, email jasmine2.butt@live.uwe.ac.uk with a sentence or two about your interests and attach an image of a black and white visual pattern, or an audio sample (or both). We will use these visual and audio samples during the session. Please also feel free to get in touch with any questions.

This workshop will form part of a research study. Participant information sheets and consent forms will be emailed to attendees prior to the workshop.

Semantics Shmantics: Building an HCI Dictionary

HCI is a multidisciplinary field which can mean that the language we use when we write papers is a jumbled mess. Some words are highly specific and some more generic which can make breaking into our field a challenge. Who hasn’t spent hours looking for something on topic x thinking they have a good overview on the topic only to discover that there is another whole range of papers on topic x but calling it topic xy. With this workshop we hope to begin working on an HCI dictionary of sorts, with plans to turn the outputs of this workshop into a paper. We plan to discuss words that should be banned (ie, emerged) the evolution of words (ie, in-the-wild to contextual), and words that need clearer definitions (ie, design space). So, if you have words you love or words you hate in HCI, then this workshop is for you!

To join, please contact elaine.czech@bristol.ac.uk and include in your email  your name and area/topics of research/specialty - at least 3 keywords
The capacity is 30ish people, based on first come, first served

Bodystorm Your Ideal Fabrication Workshop

In this workshop, participants will engage in a creative exploration of the optimal setup for a fabrication lab. Drawing inspiration from the movie "The Founder," we will brainstorm and bodystorm equipment placement, room configurations, and logistical considerations in a fun and engaging manner. Attendees will collaborate to design their ideal fabrication workspace, considering factors such as equipment placement, designated areas for different tasks, and overall layout. Do you need a wet room, do you need a dirty area for cutting wood and other crazy materials, do you need a food preparation room (why not!)?

Participant Capacity: The maximum number of participants for this workshop is 20. The workshop would be well suited for those who are using hack space or other fabrication workshop.
