Teen Space at South Park Township Public Library

Our Teen Space is a dedicated area for tweens and teens ages 11 to 18 to study, socialize, and explore their interests. We designed this space to be welcoming, comfortable, and uniquely yours! This is a place where you can connect with peers, work on school projects, or simply relax with a good book.

Why Do Tweens & Teens Need Their Own Space?

Libraries serve all ages, but tweens and teens have distinct needs for both learning and social interaction. Having a designated teen-only space ensures that:

You have a place just for you! No competing with adult study groups or younger kids.
You can express yourself freely in a teen-friendly environment.
Noise levels are managed so you can focus and engage without disturbing others.
Safety is prioritized in a space that ensures a supportive atmosphere.
You feel valued! The library recognizes how important it is to create areas exclusively for tweens and teens.

Teen Space Guidelines

The teen area, including seating, is prioritized for only tweens and teens ages 11 to 18. Adults may browse materials but should use seating in the general library areas.

Respect the Space & Each Other

Be mindful of noise levels: No excessive disruptions, yelling, or loud conversations. Keep conversations and activities at a reasonable volume so everyone can enjoy the space.
Use appropriate language: No cursing, hate speech, or offensive remarks.
Keep the space safe for everyone: No fighting, running, shoving, or throwing objects
Keep the space clean and organized: Dispose of trash, return materials to their proper place, and clean up before leaving. Snacks will no longer be allowed in the teen area if the space is not cleaned properly.
Leave the space as you found it: Return books, chairs, and materials to their places. Treat this area with respect!

Follow Library Policies

No harassment: Respect all patrons and staff. Bullying, threats, inappropriate touching, or unwanted conversations are not tolerated.
Respect library property: No vandalism, theft, or misuse of books, furniture, or technology.
No illegal activities: this includes possession or use of alcohol, drugs, or weapons.

Engage in activities that support the purpose of the teen space. This area is meant for reading, studying, relaxing, and connecting with peers. Please avoid disruptive behavior that interferes with these purposes.

Noncompliance & Consequences:

To keep the teen space safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone, the following actions will be taken if rules are not followed:

Three Strikes

Verbal warning/strike
Repeated warning — may be non-verbal
You will be asked to leave the library property

When You Can Return

If you are asked to leave for a minor violation, you may return the next day with a clean slate. Repeated violations may result in a longer suspension from the library. If you are asked to leave immediately for unsafe or disrespectful behavior, you may return:

1st removal — the next day
2nd removal — one week
3rd removal — one month

A meeting with the Library Director and/or a parent meeting may be required to return.
