Bird monitoring and 'patch' walks
BirdTrack walks you can join for a few hours out with us. On these walks we will be targeting specific species especially during migrations. "times, dates and locations will change depending on weather and wind direction" Duration of our walks are no more than 2hrs, these are great walks to join to practice your ID skills, we will teach you some skills we use which we have learnt over the years.

Splendid morning with 2 Cuckoo with 1 showing well, female Northern Wheatear on first field from cp, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Cettis's Warbler, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, Curlew, Oystercatcher, House Martin, Swallow, Swift and a few Yellow Wagtail over.

Marsh Tit briefly in flight by outdoor classroom, lovely day with sun (they got wrong again) with all the normal sp. seen. No joy with Willow Warbler as still a tad early but have had before this time of year in the past, not even a Blackcap was heard, Chiffchaff everywhere, great site this time of year and well worth a visit. Easy underfoot but still a bit sticky so good footwear is a must.

With nothing worth twitching local we decided to go to framps with no wind. Highlights: single Common Crane from sea bank distant heading N was a good start, we tried for Little Stint which was reported with Dunlin but Dunlin were sleeping so no joy, 2 Med Gull over VC while looking for the stint, Little Ringed Plover from VC while eating scone, Peregrine on the barn having her lunch, oh and single Eurasian Spoonbill

Very nice out the wind but cold in it. No joy with Red-necked Grebe as fishing boats were out, we did have 3 Kittiwake over which made up for it. Quite at Egleton due to work ongoing, 10 Sand Martin over lagoon 2 from Grebe Hide

Willow Tree - Common Crane ✅ at least 4 with a pair mating , 4 Marsh Harrier plus a few Fieldfare hanging around.
Deeping - Little Owl pair sunning in fallen tree from the bench (usual spot) , Goosander male & 2 female on River Witham , Kingfisher over , 2 Whooper Swan in onto East Pit plus a single male in full breeding plumage Black-tailed Godwit

2 Avocet sleeping from last mound of the left from top cp, male & female Beared Tit from path from VC left, Stoat on main road on the hunt, Stonechat pair by green buoy, gazillion Golden Plover wheeling above Marsh Farm Grassland plus a Merlin on a post from the sea bank, lovely walk in broken sunshine.

Pleasant walk in the warm sun with all the normal species seen, only a single male Wigeon just shows how the season is changing, countless a week or so ago. Work cutting and burning reeds kept the birds away so nothing really to note. Really felt like Spring is just around the corner.

First twitch of 2026 with great views of Great Grey Shrike ✅ with the bird hunting and hovering looking for prey, we didn't want to get as close as some have and were to not disturb, 8yrs since my last one, nice to get a Lincs Shrike, parking is a bit on the muddy side but doable, hardly any walking, well worth a look.
Bird was at the back of uncut rough grass field, easy to spot.

Very cold in the wind, great start with 250+ Russian White-fronted Geese ✅ (anser albifrons albifrons) in field right of the entrance to the reserve, lost count at 250, plus about 100 Pink-footed Geese in same field but right of Russian flock, these birds are very jumpy but they do come back when flushed. Tons of Lapwing, Wigeon, Golden Plover, a single Dunlin, all the normal wildfowl on now more than normal amounts of water.

Not much this morning due to the fog, highlights: Marsh Tit briefly with Great Tit (first time at site) Redpoll, Siskin feeding in the tops of alder and beech.

Very cold in the wind which is hard to get out of here but plenty of birds about, Tons of Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Lapwing, Golden Plover. plus Dunlin, Snipe, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew, Stonechat, Meadow Pipit, Skylark.

14 Hawfinch ✅ with up to 5 feeding under trees by first bench on the right along boardwalk, plus in total when these birds flew up into trees more came in from E. 14 in total before heading W. Goosander 9 male & a female on main lake plus ad Caspian Gull ✅ with Common Gull & Black-headed Gull.

Weather: Sunny, wind SSE ☀️🥶 2103 steps
6 Snow Bunting ✅ still flitting around the base of the sea wall (seaward side) by first bench on the right from top cp, then headed towards East Hide. 4 Whooper Swan , Grey Plover, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine & a ton of Dark-bellied Brent Goose on saltmarsh. Great to see the water levels almost where they should be too.

Not all our walk reports are added due to the rarity of species and privacy of locations, these walks are not posted, you will be contacted privately with meeting points and location times. Even sighting reports will be held back to protect species.
Our Terms and Walk Locations:
We have started BTO Walks using tetrad and transect system, which is a 2 hour max walk to most of the locations we monitor locally for the BTO using BirdTrack, walks are at a slower pace so we can identify all species around us with heard and observed being recorded.

We monitor many different species throughout the seasons, some are common species to keep a check on numbers in specific areas.
'it's not all about the rare stuff'
Not all our monitoring walks are posted on this site as we wouldn't have time to add them, many of these walks are only possible alone as parking or numbers are not possible. All walks are recorded and posted to the BTO while out in the field plus sent to relevant companies, county recorder's contacted where applicable.
"Some" of these walks are in private estates, MOD sites and private gardens even farmland where there are no access to the general public, We thought it would be a nice idea to take you on these as always very productive while monitoring. We are only able to take 8 people with us including a guide, so it is important to book asap. These walks are a first and well worth joining to see parts normally strictly private. These will be marked as "Private" all our private walks will be pre-arranged so full access will be accessible. So, keep your eyes out on our Home and this page for these walks as they may be suddenly added with only days' noticeッ
No cameras will be allowed on some of our "Private" walks, we will advise prior to these walks.

Green Sandpiper x2 in Plot 1 flushed by Buzzard then 2 more joined them in flight, Common Snipe off Plot 2, Cetti's Warbler in hand being rung by Alan, smart bird up close, also to note, Water Rail everywhere, Meadow Pipit , Lesser Black-backed Gull and a few possible Great Black-backed Gull on first field by the car park. Nothing from the hide as overgrown.

📸 Long-eared Owl ✅ stonking morning, with 6 seen and very close too, hopefully they are not disturbed to much but I think they are very much trusting by now. 10 were reported earlier by thermal. Also to note: Red-breasted Merganser pair & a drk & 2 redhead Goosander along the River Welland, still no sign of any Glossy Ibis. Very muddy so boots are a must.
