Thanks for showing an interest in Southend Martial Arts!
At our club, we bring together like-minded people who want to explore and train in diverse and interesting martial arts. Whether you’re looking for fitness, self-defence, or simply something new and rewarding, we’ve got you covered.
Our progressive and structured curriculum covers every range of combat — from striking and grappling to weapons training — in a way that’s fun, safe, and constantly evolving.
I’m Liam Williams, founder and head instructor of the Paper Street Combat Club and Southend Martial Arts.
I’ve been training and teaching martial arts and fitness for over 20 years, and I’m fortunate to have won multiple awards and earned instructor grades and qualifications in multiple arts.
But what really matters isn’t the titles — it’s the philosophy behind our training:
“No ego. No intimidation. Just learning, growth, and respect.”
Our club is built on community, not competition. Beginners train alongside experienced martial artists, each helping each other improve.
Our sessions combine ancient and modern arts — from Viking wrestling (Glima) and Irish stick fighting (Bataireacht) to practical Combatives, JKD and Tai Chi for balance and flow. It’s an approach you won’t find anywhere else in Southend.
If you’d like to come down, I’d be happy to show you around the club and answer any questions.
Some common questions we get asked:
“I’m a complete beginner — is that OK?” Absolutely. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’ll guide you step by step.
“Do I have to be fit first?” Nope — training here gets you fit along the way.
“Do I need to buy gear?” Not at first. Just wear something comfortable — we’ll advise you later if you want your own equipment.
Every class is designed to help you achieve your goals, whatever your starting point.
Liam
