Instructors

   Professor González (she/her) has been teaching anthropology at San Diego Miramar College for 20 years. She is the SDCCD District International Education Coordinator, a role that allows her to develop study abroad programs at Miramar College. She has traveled to 5 continents and has enjoyed taking students abroad since 2013 on programs to Japan, Spain, Italy, and Peru.

Professor González is the recipient of a 2021 Mellon/ACLS Fellowship for research into the Anthropology of Human Space Exploration and the 2018 American Anthropological Association/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology. Professor González is author/co-author of two anthropology textbooks from the University of Toronto Press. 

Professor Jae Calanog (or Jae, he/him) teaches physics and astronomy at San Diego Miramar College and serves as Chair of the Physical Sciences department. He earned his B.A. from UC Berkeley and his Ph.D. from UC Irvine, and is one of the first Filipino Americans to earn a doctorate in his field. Driven by his own experiences, Jae is passionate about supporting underrepresented students in STEM through inclusive teaching, mentoring, and hands-on learning experiences. 

An avid traveler, he views himself as a lifelong student and sees travel as an immersive way to understand the world. Through teaching abroad, he encourages students to see both science and culture through new lenses, inspired by his favorite idea in astronomy: exploring the universe through different perspectives.
