During my year-long study abroad experience, I was afforded the ability to intern from January to May of 2023 with a local business owner at the knitting & crochet café known as Du Thé et des Laines. My role included assisting in day-to-day operation, marketing, inventory, and any other necessary tasks. This internship experience allowed me to better understand French working culture. I was able to gain first-hand knowledge regarding running a small business, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were several inventory and supply chain issues that were still affecting the café which required adaptation. I was able to collaborate with the owner and another intern to look for more local options for fibers & tools, requiring me to communicate with other French small businesses.
Being involved in the day-to-day operations of the café allowed me to develop both a better understanding of the work culture and of the realities of running a business. Especially regarding the importance of social media marketing given that I assisted in creating content for marketing purposes. Additionally, I assisted with knitting & crochet lessons when needed, and helped develop more events geared towards the large international population in Montpellier. In all honesty, interning at Du Thé et des Laines is one of my fondest memories of my study abroad and it has confirmed my desire to continue working abroad.
In conjunction with this opportunity, I was able to take a course while there which focused on the realities and laws regarding working in France as well as a course when I returned in which I wrote a paper reflecting on the potential of expanding this concept. Both of the final submissions for those courses are included below.
