For this project, we had to review our own social media habits and look at how society as a whole uses social media.
After taking this quiz, my result was: "You and social media are pretty inseparable. You might not be 100% addicted (yet!), but you definitely need to evaluate how much time you're spending scrolling on your social media accounts. It may not be making you happy. One study by Facebook of teen Instagram users in the US and UK found more than 40% of those who reported feeling 'unattractive' said the feelings started when using Instagram. It's a good time to start thinking about decluttering your digital life through a social media and digital detox!"
This feels pretty accurate, as I don't like how much time I spend scrolling through social media but it's pretty easy to get sucked in. I've been trying to make more of an effort to focus on hobbies that don't involve screens (such as reading) to get off of my phone.
I was surprised to learn that there was only a slight difference in how social media users and non-users viewed the impact of social media. Of social media users, 63% said that social media has a negative impact; 69% of non-users also say it has a negative impact. I feel like it would make sense if a lower percentage of social media users had a negative perception of it, since they are choosing to use social media regularly. However, as someone who dislikes a lot of the impact social media has had but continues to use it anyway, I can understand why a lot of social media users who have a negative perception of it and why there isn't much of a difference between users and non-users.
I think that social media has, in general, has had a negative impact on society. I don't think all of it is negative, like for example making friends online is a positive thing. However, social media sites are designed to entice you so that you stay on there longer and spend money, and it's really easy to get swept in and it's hard to break out of the endless scrolling cycle.
I learned that it is pretty common to get sucked into your feed and endlessly scroll through your feed, even if you dislike how often you use social media. I also learned after taking the quiz that I should really cut back on my own social media habits.
