When the summer sun becomes dangerous, our city’s most vulnerable neighbors—especially those living unsheltered—face life-threatening conditions. LeaKC, alongside our partners in the Extreme Weather Planning Committee, is proud to support a community-wide Heat Response Plan that activates resources, cooling spaces, and compassion-driven outreach.

What’s in the Plan?

• Cooling Sites Across the City
  Verified locations offering air conditioning, water, restrooms, and refuge

• Street Outreach and Harm Reduction
  Outreach teams distributing water, sunscreen, and lifesaving supplies

• Color-Coded Activation System
  A simple Red-Yellow-Orange system alerts the public when risk increases

• Water Access Mapping
  Community-driven mapping of refill stations, rest areas, and spray grounds

• Donation and Distribution Hubs
  Designated drop-off sites for water, bug spray, sunscreen, and more

• Faith Community Leadership
  Congregations stepping up to open doors, volunteer, and spread the word

Why It Matters

LeaKC members bring lived experience to this work—and we know heat isn’t just uncomfortable. It’s deadly. This plan is about action, not pity. Safety, not shame.

How You Can Help

1. Host a Cooling Space

Church, nonprofit, or business? Open your doors during heat alerts. We’ll support you.

2. Donate Critical Supplies

Water bottles, sunscreen, bug spray—drop them at verified locations across the city.

3. Volunteer or Spread the Word

Join outreach teams or help us share alerts and education materials.

4. Advocate for Equity

Support system changes that prevent homelessness and heat-related deaths year-round.
