SoLI 2021 is a highly interactive event, combining plenary and small working group sessions engaging in the Futures Frequency method. Due to the nature of the workshop, space is limited.

WHAT

The Summit on Law + Innovation (SoLI) is an annual event sponsored by Vanderbilt Law's Program on Law + Innovation. Each year, we choose a theme and format that facilitates the purpose of SoLI: to connect the silos of legal practice, legal education, and legal technology to make law better in measurable ways. With SoLI, we do this by creating a moment in time that (we hope) leads to movement over time.

In 2021, we recognized an immense opportunity to be proactive in designing a better future as we emerge from the collective experience that is the COVID pandemic. This opportunity led us to the Futures Frequency method, created for the explicit purpose of building the kind of alternative future we wish to see. And to the challenge we will tackle: The year is 2050. What does our work in the legal profession look like? And how are we preparing lawyers for this work?

The virtual workshop will engage a limited number of participants in a 3-part process combining asynchronous working groups, followed by a synchronous virtual workshop including plenary conversations with small group working sessions:

CHALLENGE existing assumptions we have about the future of work in the legal profession.
IMAGINE a preferred future.
Take ACTION to shape the future.

There are many possibilities for the future of work in the legal profession. We can influence which one of them will become a reality. Influencing the future requires that we understand current challenges, are aware of our assumptions about the future, imagine alternative futures, and reflect all of this in the choices we make in the present. Our ability to influence the future starts with the work we will do as part of SoLI.

There is no cost to participate in SoLI, other than your commitment of time and engagement in the workshop.

WHEN

The asynchronous part of the Futures Frequency work will kick off in February 2022.

The synchronous workshop date is currently pending, anticipated to be in March 2022 and is planned from 9 am - 12 pm CDT. Find a (tentative) schedule for the synchronous workshop here.

WHO

SoLI is open to anyone with an interest in imagining a better future for how we work in the legal profession. Our hope is that a diverse range of people from across the spectrum of the legal profession will join us. We're recruiting facilitators for the small working group sessions from a variety of organizations and locales, and with diverse perspectives and experiences, as well.

The sole common denominator we seek for participants: a keen interest in imagining a better future of work for the legal profession, and motivation to act accordingly.

HOW

We ask all participants to commit to these things:

#1📚 Do a little bit of homework. We'll share resources curated to inspire your reflection on the future of work in the legal profession and ask that you spend some time in advance of the workshop diving in as preparation for our work together.

#2 📌Contribute to an asynchronous working session. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute resources and ideas to inform the work we do in the synchronous workshop session. The live session will build on the foundational work done asynchronously.

#3 👋 Attend the full workshop. As an interactive workshop, everyone's experience depends on the commitment of participants to show up for the full workshop session.

#3 💬 Engage as part of a working group in break-out sessions during the workshop. Our primary work during the retrospective will be in small working groups with short plenary sessions between group sessions. We ask you to commit to working with your group on the day of the event by engaging respectfully and meaningfully in accord with the following SoLI Ethos:

Be supportive. Encourage and support your SoLI colleagues.

Share generously. Your ideas, stories, and experiences may be exactly what someone else needs to hear today to solve a problem or seize an opportunity.

Be constructive. We’re here to push each other forward and lift each other up. Find ways to help each other think bigger, reframe challenges, and stay curious.

Seek connections that last beyond the moment.
