Post Graduate Programmes

  • M.Tech. Coastal and Harbour Engineering

  • M.Tech. Integrated Coastal Zone Management

  • M.Tech. Ocean and Coastal Safety Management

Post Graduate Programme is formulated to obtain expertise in Harbour Engineering to fulfill the requirements of design and construction of Port and Harbour structures and also to become Offshore engineers to design, specialized subjects such as Ocean Engineering, Marine Structure, oceanography, ecology, biology, economics and management in the functioning of fisheries, specific coastal safety and lifesaving operational projects and programs primarily directed from the CSM

School is also having a newly-developed Master Program adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Integrated Coastal Management in recognition of the need for individuals who can understand both landward (e.g. indigenous communities) and seaward (e.g. coastal structures, ecology etc) concerns.

M.Tech Coastal and Harbour Engineering

Coastal engineering is a branch of civil engineering concerned with the specific demands posed by constructing at or near the coast, as well as the development of the coast itself.

Course Outcome

The development of coastal infrastructure

ELIGIBILITY:

B.Tech in Marine Engineering / Civil / Mechanical / Naval Arch / 60% marks preferably with GATE/NET

ASSESSMENT AND STANDARDS OF PASSING:

The evaluation of the students in a course shall be based on his/her performance in various examinations, term papers/assignments, seminars, records, project reports etc. Assessment will be based on both internal and external evaluation and viva.

NO. O FSEATS: 15

MODE OF SELECTION

Through common entrance examination conducted by KUFOS

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

• To fulfill the requirements of design and construction of Port and harbor structures and also to become Offshore engineers to design and construct as well as to operate major & minor ports

• In the investigations, planning, design, development, maintenance and administration of marine projects

• on all aspects of ocean and coastal engineering, including but not limited to wave dynamics and wind waves, tides and ocean currents, sea level changes, tsunamis and storm surges, near shore sediment transport, coastal morphology, beach erosion, shore protection,

• ocean acoustics, remote sensing of ocean, marine exploration techniques, AUV/ROV, offshore platforms, submarine pipelines, seawalls and breakwaters,

• construction and design methods for offshore and coastal infrastructures, maintenance of navigation channels, dredging technology, harbor engineering, materials for marine structures,

• Marine geotechnical engineering, estuarine processes, marine environmental problems, marine ecosystem dynamics, ocean energy development, coastal zone management, safety and amenity of coastal cities, etc.

M.Tech Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Importance of the Coastal Zone Management

· Coastal regions are densely populated and environmentally vulnerable. they are subject to increasing pressures from many sources, including industrial development, Urban expansion, the exploitation of marine resources and tourism.

· An urgent need to integrate the many uses made of coastal resources and to develop them in harmony with the environment.

· The complexities in managing development and use of marine and coastal resources have led to the need for experts with advanced knowledge and skills in engineering, natural and social science disciplines

Outcome

• The newly-developed Master Program adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of integrated coastal management in recognition of the need for individuals who can understand both landward (e.g. indigenous communities) and seaward (e.g. coastal structures, ecology etc) concerns.

Eligibilty

B.Tech/BE in Integrated Coastal Zone management/ Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/ Environmental Engineering/ Harbour Engineering/Coastal Engineering, Law graduates, MSc in Marine geology/Geo Science, GeoPhysics, Marine biology & Oceanography and BFSc. Aminimum mark of 50% mark is required for the qualifying degree.

Job prospects

• Research

• Many coastal managers work with local, State, Federal, or international Government agencies to help successfully implement environmental statutes related to coastal areas

• These managers brainstorm with others to come up with effective solutions to coastal area issues. They have to be effective communicators, and willing to work with the different parties in a dispute in order to come up with the best solutions.

• Also work in environmental restoration, restoring damaged coastlines, estuaries and wetlands, and fragile near-coast marine environments. These scientists work closely with affected plants and animals to ensure their sustainability. They may work with local and State interest groups and agency

• Work for a non-profit organization and run groups of volunteers to help with restoration projects, such as planting native grasses. They may work with community groups, such as fishermen and environmental groups, to solve a multi-faceted issue like over-fishing.

• Scientists in this area may also work internationally, helping to restore the environment in traditionally neglected but ecologically important areas

• Research Scientist ,Oceanographer ,Coastal Environmental Quality Monitoring Coordinator) ,Senior Marsh Restoration Ecologist/Project ,Estuarine Food Web Analysis and Modeling ,Coastal Hazards Analyst ,Coastal Oceanographer

• Senior Consultant- Coastal/Estuarine Processes and Geomorphology , Marine Mammalogy and Coastal Ecology

M.Tech. Ocean and Coastal Safety Management

Outcome

• The regulatory environment

• Causes of accidents in coastal and maritime construction

• Key hazards in coastal and maritime engineering

• Guidelines for good practice

• i) Good practice for generic areas of coastal and maritime construction

ii) Good practice at each project stage
