History

On June 9th, 2020, graduate students and postdocs at Steward Observatory organized a Town Hall in response to the Black Lives Matter and the #BlackInSTEM movements. As a result, the Steward Observatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SODEI) initiative was created. SODEI serves our community by bringing together the major groups in Steward and maintaining a structure that consciously counteracts the usual power dynamics felt by the most vulnerable of us.

Through SODEI, we identify, discuss, and develop actionable plans to solve the issues that mean the most to our community members in the hopes that we can achieve meaningful, positive, and lasting change.
