Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)
Backstory:
In the original Pacific Rim 10 years before the sequel, giant aliens called Kaiju begin invading Earth through a portal on the Pacific seafloor. The humans retaliate by building giant mechs called Jaegers to fight them, stationed in massive buildings constructed around the Pacific Rim called Shatterdomes. At the end of the movie, all of the remaining Jaegers attack the portal, and one of them jumps through and detonates its reactor, destroying the portal. The main character of Pacific Rim: Uprising, Jake Pentecost, lost his father, Stacker Pentecost, in this attack.
Summary:
Pacific Rim: Uprising follows former Jaeger pilot Jake Pentecost, who returns to the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) after quitting for ten years and arrives at the China Shatterdome to start training cadets. There, it's revealed that the Jaeger program is threatened by Shao Industry's new drone program, which produces smaller, remotely controlled Jaegers. A mysterious rogue Jaeger, Obsidian Fury, appears and attacks Sydney, causing the PPDC to authorize and deploy the new drone Jaegers immediately. Pentecost later destroys Obsidian Fury, and upon destroying its reactor, it is revealed that Obsidian Fury was piloted by a Kaiju's secondary brain that was grown on Earth. The drones arrive at the locations they are supposed to defend, and they are hijacked by secretly mounted Kaiju brains in their reactors. The drones simultaneously attack every Shatterdome, crippling almost every Jaeger except for Pentecost's Jaeger and his cadets' Jaegers. Additionally, the drones temporarily reopen breaches between Earth and the Kaiju, allowing several to come through. The movie ends with a long fight in which the Jaegers eventually win.
