Spay and neuter is the surgical sterilization of your pet to prevent the pet from reproducing. It is a surgery to remove the reproductive organs. Spaying (ovarian hysterectomy) is for females and neutering (castration) is for males. After surgery your pet will be unable to reproduce offspring. Spaying can reduce the chances your female pet will develop Pyometra.
Typically surgery can be preformed any time the pet reaches "puberty." Sexual maturity occurs around six months of age for most dogs and cats. Because the surgery to spay/neuter requires anesthesia the risk factors increase with the age of the pet. You may discuss your concerns regarding the surgery with your local veterinarian.
Many people do not sterilize their pets typically out of procrastination, misunderstanding, or misguided good intentions. Spaying and neutering is advantageous to your pet and can save you money.
The surgery may reduce aggressive behavior or repress your pets urge to wander away from home.
The operation does not cause weight gain in your pet. Pets become over weight with inappropriate diet and lack of exercise, just like people.
The health benefits of spaying and neutering are greater when the surgery is performed at or prior to the sexual maturity of the animal. Allowing your pet to produce a litter only means you must now find loving homes for the new arrivals. Only 1 in 5 homeless pets end up in a loving forever home.
There is no guarantee, particularly with a mixed breed animal, that your pets offspring will look like or act like your pet. Often the characteristics are very different from the parent pets. In the process of attempting to get a duplication of your current pet, many babies will be born and all will need loving forever homes.
Most find the cost of the "business" usually outweighs the income and continual breeding of the female can endanger her health. Ultimately you are responsible for every puppy or kitten you bring into this world, even if you give it away.
Accidents happen and you never plan for pets to escape your fenced in yard, but the fact is, animals do. Animals have been known to mate through fences, dig under, and climb over the fences. Spaying and neutering is the only true form of birth control for pets.
