The GSNM is found in the mountainous regions of west and south central China. There is roughly around just over 10,000 members of this species left.
The GSNM is listed as "endangered" with IUCN.
Reasons for Decline:
Major loss in the GSNM's habitat is the lead reason for the continuous decline of the species. This loss is caused by agricultural expansions. Along with loss of habitat, the GSNM sufferers from illegal hunting for there coats and other medicinal purposes.
Conservation
A case can be made that there is not enough being done to keep the GSNM population protected. Unfortunately GSNM suffer from just as much lack of help as many species do. The GSNM is protected by CITES Appendix I, and as Category I of the Chinese Wildlife Protection Act, 1989. Shennongjia National Park in China has put in the effort for conservation by providing food in the food for groups they lure into the park that suffer from the lack of food in the winter months. Globally these monkeys are probably not well known obviously, so increase in the awareness of there existence would be a solid start in the right direction. What makes conservation efforts tough for this species is that it is found exclusively in China. So the increase in help in conservation must improve from the the people native to the country and regions that the GSNM call home. Donations do wonders in improving the help in these efforts so looking for more help globally could be nothing but beneficial.
