Assessment Background
On August 20, 2021 the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA) of the area where the former lumber mill operated. DOE notified the developer, Weyerhaeuser (operator of the mill, and former owner of the entire site), King County, and the City of Snoqualmie of the results of this assessment.
This type of assessment consists of reviewing existing documentation about contamination of the site. DOE uses a scoring system that assigns values to many different components of environmental contamination, and then combines those values into a final score. The final score considers hazards to human health and environmental health. The net result of the assessment is that the Snoqualmie Mill site has a "site rank" of 1. Site ranks range from 1 to 5, with a rank of 1 indicating the highest risk relative to other ranked sites in Washington state. A rank of 1 does not mean that our site is the worst in the entire state, but it means that it is in the worst group of sites.
