Smart thermostat recommendation from an owner

My unit in Hakone has a thermostat for the electric baseboard heat in each bedroom.  Last month, I replaced those thermostats with Mysa Smart Thermostats for Electric Baseboard Heaters.  These new thermostats are internet connected, so I can

  • control the thermostats remotely, turning them down if they have been left turned up

  • view the current temperature and humidity from anywhere using their app.

  • set a maximum and minimum value, so they can’t be turned down too much or turned up too high

Installation was straightforward — take out the old thermostats and put in the new ones — which look much sleeker and more modern.  Because these are 240 volt thermostats, you should turn off the power at the breaker before replacing them (and use a volt meter to check that the power is indeed off).   If you are interested in doing something like this, I’m happy to discuss.

From Abby Kalotkin

It is with sadness to tell SNHA of the passing of long time owner Arthur Kalotkin in July after a brave 5-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. We have owned and loved our one bedroom Liftside 32 unit for 27 years. Smugglers Notch Resort was one of Arthur’s favorite places. He hiked and skied all the mountain’s trails. Our two children grew up here in Winter and Summer. Now our grandchildren enjoy their home away from home. We were able to take Arthur to Smuggs for the July 4th 2026 holiday including the Homeowner's Meeting. We plan to continue our annual visits to beautiful Vermont.

Where Family Values Run Deep: Our Family’s 25 Years at Smugglers’ Notch

For 25 years, our family has been going to Smugglers’ Notch. What began as a place to ski became so much more—a place filled with memories, traditions, laughter, and the people we love most.

For our father, Mark Horne, Smugglers’ Notch was one of his favorite places on earth. He loved everything about it: skiing its trails, hiking through the mountains, snowshoeing in the winter, biking in the warmer months, fishing, and, most of all, simply being there with his children and grandchildren.

Smuggs' always felt like home. It was a place where our family could slow down, spend time together, and create the kinds of memories that stay with you for a lifetime. Generations of our family have grown up there, sharing adventures, stories, meals, traditions, and countless moments that we will forever cherish.

When our father passed away, our family had the privilege of planting a tree at Smugglers' Notch to honor him. Today, that tree stands as a living reminder of him—and of the special connection our family has with this place. As the tree grows, so too will the generations of our family who continue to gather at Smugglers’ Notch.

His memory will always be a part of the place he loved so much. And we will continue to spend as much time as we can at Smugglers’ Notch—skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, laughing, and making new memories with our children and grandchildren.

Because for our family, Smuggs is more than a destination.

It is home.

It is family.

We are grateful to Smugglers' Notch for being part of our family's story and now, we are especially grateful that a small part of Dad's story can continue to grow there.
