Sartartia Middle School counselors strive to provide comprehensive school counseling services to all students within a positive, supportive environment. Our program is designed to help students develop a better understanding of themselves and enhance their academic, social/emotional, and career readiness abilities in order to become responsible and productive members of society.
The Sartartia Middle School counseling team works diligently to provide an inclusive and responsive counseling program to all our students following the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling as our framework. Each counselor works closely with the grade level administrator, grade level content teams, and other stakeholders such as parents, community members, coaches, and other school staff to promote and deliver our program. Together we work to meet student needs through relevant guidance lessons, effective responsive services, individual planning, and system support. Each of these areas allows the counselor to address our student's interpersonal and intrapersonal effectiveness, personal health and safety, and post-secondary planning and career readiness.
At SMS, we live and breathe A.I.R. (accountability, integrity ,and respect). These traits are modeled daily by our staff and students. These traits work to enforce the comprehensive counseling program at SMS.
SMS counselors are committed to the program and to reducing and eliminating the most prevalent issues our students experience and that we see on our campus. Some of these needs include the development of coping skills, building resiliency and working through challenges, healthy self image, and academic planning. The comprehensive school counseling program is an important part of the campus culture allowing counselors the opportunity to address student and campus needs. The counseling program will enable students to develop their full potential by providing age appropriate and relevant learning opportunities to foster FBISD goals that students are equipped with skills for life, servant leaders, effective communicators, critical thinkers, compassionate citizens, collaborative team members, and life-long learners.
For the Sartartia Middle School counseling program to be successful the following criteria must be met:
The program must have the support and commitment of all campus administrators.
Parents must act as partners with the counselor to promote student wellness.
The school counselor must have access to and a sufficient budget for the necessary materials and supplies to support our program.
The counselor’s role as an integral part of the campus is clearly defined and mirrors the role as set forth by the district counseling program guidelines.
Counseling activities and events are planned and included in the campus yearly calendar.
Counselors monitor and evaluate outcome data as well as feedback from all stakeholders and the counseling advisory committee to make improvements in the program.
The Sartartia Middle School counseling Program Goals are developed using district core beliefs and expectations, guidance from our Counseling Advisory Council, our Campus Improvement Plan (CIP) goals, data from the campus needs assessment, Student Support Team feedback, and individual and group guidance information, data discussed during Coffee with the Counselors, and monthly Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings. In addition, the counselors will use individual goals as well as department goals developed with our principal in completion of the FIBSD Principal Partnership Agreement. Using data and information gathered from these areas allows us to target needs specific to our students, parents, and staff in order to provide the best counseling program possible.
Evaluation is a vital part of improving and implementing our program with fidelity. The SMS counselors use a variety of methods to evaluate our program including collecting different types of data to examine our program. We also believe in collecting feedback and data from our stakeholders including teachers, students, and parents to give us a more holistic view of our program and its effectiveness. We use these results to help us plan and adjust our services to our students and stakeholders. Our team uses pre and post surveys, a teacher needs assessment, and parent surveys during our parent outreach sessions to guide our program services. Each year the counseling team meets with our administrative team and our Campus Advisory Council to review our data and plan for the following year.
