Within schools, the library plays an important role in supporting teaching and learning. Each school community is unique, with specific needs that must be met to create a positive learning environment. The most meaningful way to support teaching and learning is to start by understanding the people it serves. Alcantara-Antoine (2023) highlights the value of qualitative data, such as comments, testimonials, and feedback, in providing a deeper understanding of a library’s impact (p. 5). As a school librarian, I recognize that teaching, learning, and strategic goals should drive decisions made from within the library. Assessment is essential in identifying areas for improvement and ensuring that resources are allocated effectively. Alcantara-Antoine (2023) also points out that data helps uncover blind spots and informs collection development and programming decisions (p. 4). By conducting needs assessments, librarians can pinpoint growth opportunities and create targeted programs and services to support the school community.
CAMP (LIS 653) provided an opportunity to analyze collection development data, examining the physical collection, digital resources, and databases to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement (2.2). The assessment revealed that a significant portion of the school’s learners lacked representation in the physical collection. Specifically, Muslim and Middle Eastern representation was notably absent, making it clear that an intentional effort was needed to diversify the collection (2.1, 2.3). In response, a five-year plan was developed to increase the presence of diverse voices in the collection while simultaneously updating the nonfiction section to ensure it remained relevant. Alcantara-Antoine (2023) explains that libraries dedicate substantial effort to providing resources, but the true measure of success lies in whether those efforts are effectively utilized (p. 4). Data serves as an advocacy tool, demonstrating the library’s impact and reinforcing the importance of strategic collection development. The insights gained from the CAMP assessment facilitated meaningful discussions with the Head of School regarding the library’s collection and how best to align purchases with the school’s needs and demographics (2.4). These conversations reinforced the importance of ensuring the library’s offerings reflect the diverse backgrounds and interests of the learners.
In addition to collection development, professional development plays a key role in supporting educators. The Feedback Workshop Plan (LIS 635) was designed to introduce educators to a tech tool that enables ongoing feedback, fostering reflection, and ehancing engagement (2.3). My understanding of adult learning theory was used in designing this workshop. I provided instructions, curated a variety of feedback strategies compatible with DocAppender, and compiled resources to promote constructive feedback (2.4). The workshop addressed a critical need that educators were seeking ways to provide meaningful, efficient feedback while also encouraging learners to take an active role in their learning (2.2). By implementing this system, educators can facilitate a culture of reflection in their classrooms (2.1). While setting up the system requires front load the work, the long term benefits outweigh initial effort, as it streamlines feedback processes and has the potential to enhance learner engagement.
These examples illustrate the librarian’s essential role in the school community. Librarians are uniquely positioned to influence teaching and learning through thoughtful collection development, strategic planning, and professional development initiatives. However, their impact is most significant when supported by school leadership and integrated into the mission and vision of the school. Advocacy is a crucial aspect of the librarian’s role, ensuring that the library’s contributions are recognized and that its services align with the needs of the school community.
Since completing these assignments, I have become more adept at quickly accessing and utilizing data to inform decision-making within the library. While qualitative data is invaluable in capturing user experiences, quantitative data is often quicker to gather and serves as a strong starting point for discussions. By leveraging both types of data, I can make informed decisions that enhance library services and resources. The reports I learned to generate from the CAMP (LIS 653) assignment have become essential tools in my ongoing efforts to refine collection development strategies. Knowing how to access and analyze OPAC data is critical not only for improving the collection but also for improving library operations overall. An inclusive, diverse, and accessible collection is fundamental to ensuring that all learners see themselves represented in the library’s offerings.
The Feedback Workshop Plan (LIS 635) was not my first experience designing professional development, but it was a unique format that allowed me to refine my approach to instructional design. Since then, I have had the opportunity to lead multiple professional development sessions, thanks to an administration that values my expertise. These experiences have helped me grow in my ability to create high-quality, impactful PD sessions tailored to the needs of educators. I have gained confidence in my ability to design and deliver engaging workshops, and I look forward to continuing to develop my instructional design skills. Professional development is a vital component of the educational system, and I take my role in shaping these learning experiences seriously. By leveraging my position as a librarian, I can make a meaningful impact on my school community, ensuring that educators and learners alike have access to the tools and resources they need to succeed. I am eager to continue using data, outreach efforts, and instructional design strategies to enhance the library’s role as a central aspect of learning and innovation within the school.
