Upcoming Classes and Exercises
1) Stations simulate different aspects of an emergency.
2) Neighbors practice responding with different team roles.
No special skills are needed! The drill is open to families of all ages.
Neighborhood members gather at the Command Center (HRC Gym) at 10am on Drill Day.
Leads will guide you and your neighbors on the drill process, the simulated disaster scenario, and the response teams.
Leads will describe the mock emergency scenario. The most common is earthquake, but it may also be a winter storm or another emergency event.
Leads will go over the sequence of events, and how the teams will practice responding to the mock emergency.
Teams will be created to cover all of the main roles needed to support neighbors during an emergency.
Once the mock emergency has “happened,” the teams disperse to practice doing their roles.
Teams perform their assigned actions, report back to the command center, and get instructions on next steps.
Leads will describe the different teams, what each role does, and ask for volunteers to be on the teams. Roles include:
Incident Commander
Communications
Scribe
First Aid Team
Safety Team
Well-being Team
Play a key role by organizing the drill so that neighbors learn how to help each other in the event of a real emergency. Highlands CERT will share materials and guide neighbors so they are prepared, informed and willing to help each other when needed.
Responsible for overall leadership of the drill. This can include assigning volunteers to the Safety, Well-being and First Aid teams, prioritizing which simulated incidents need to be escalated to emergency responders, and leading a discussion of lessons learned at the drill’s conclusion.
Responsible for receiving, dispatching and documenting radio/walkie communications with radio operators to escalate critical incidents to emergency responders. CERT provides radio training and equipment to communications leads so they can use the radios effectively.
Responsible for signing in volunteers, collecting incident report forms from various teams, and logging incidents actions/updates on an incident status board. This person works closely with the incident commander and communications lead.
Responsible for establishing a First Aid station, gathering medical supplies, and providing basic first aid/comfort.
Responsible for identifying and responding to hazards, such as house fires, and broken gas and water lines.
Responsible for providing support to team members and neighbors that have experienced stress or trauma from the event and checks on team members to prevent burnout.
