Project 1 (Cluster Project) : FPGA Design of Digital Signal Processing for Seismic Applications (linked with the C2SD project of IIT- Kharagpur)
Project 2 (Individual Project) : Design and SPICE Simulation of Low Power Analog Front End (AFE), RF Low Noise Amplifier and Mixer Focusing on Seismic Applications targeted towards ASIC Design.
Project 2
Motivation and Objective
Severe earthquake is devastating for tall buildings. However, a building will collapse only if it absorbs sufficient energy from the earthquake at a frequency near its natural frequency ( f0). So long the frequency of vibration is not sufficiently close to the natural frequency ( f0) of the building, the building is not in danger of collapsing. The natural frequencies of most buildings are in range of 0.2Hz to 4Hz. The sensor along with the necessary interface electronic circuit is expected to be deployed in a building and a sensor network encompassing several buildings through mutual communication is required. In this project application, we are considering a new type of seismic sensor that is highly sensitive to vibration at one specific frequency/narrow frequency range close to the natural frequency of a building or structure that is to be monitored and we aim to develop the interface electronic circuit, LNA, Mixer circuit for this.
Brief Outline of the Project
For detection of the effect of seismic vibrations on tall buildings, differential inductive seismic (DIS) sensor based on LVDT principle is selected. The output waveform of the DIS sensor is complex, resembling the double side band with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) modulated waveform. This leads to the requirement of a read out integrated circuit (ROIC) which gives an useful form of the output signal. The principle of operation of read out integrated circuit for the DIS sensor is based on coherent demodulation technique.
