about the Lab

Welcome to the Choi Group

We are an international, diverse, and multidisciplinary team of chemists and engineers within the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Hanbat National University. Our research focuses on the fundamental understanding and practical application of smart nanomaterials and functional polymers for environmental remediation.

Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNSs): What are they? Where do they originate? How do they interact with the environment? And, most importantly, how can we effectively remove them?

These are the core questions driving our research. Our ultimate goal is the bottom-up construction of robust bulk structures composed of smart nanomaterials and functional polymers for efficient environmental cleanup. While we often encounter the term "hazardous and noxious materials," precisely defining their composition and identifying their sources can be remarkably complex. Addressing these challenges through a deep understanding of HNSs and the development of advanced smart nanomaterials and functional polymers is one of the most pressing scientific endeavors of our time.

Specific Research Topics

Our current projects include designing smart air filters for PM and VOC removal, developing novel adsorbents for microplastics and heavy metal removal, designing photocatalytic materials for organic pollutant degradation, and creating oil/water separators and thermal evaporators for water purification.
