Over seventy percent of the world is made up of water. According to an article from Science of the Total Environment, authors Leonel and Tonetti write that the demand for water is growing twice as fast as the human population is. Furthermore, seventy percent of global water usage is for agriculture (Leonel & Tonetti, 2021). The overuse of water in agriculture is a problem that has a solution. There are ways to reduce the usage of water, it is extremely important to find them and regulate them. This would significantly reduce the growing demand worldwide for water and get it to parts of the world where water is scarce. There are other problems related to the overuse of water, especially for small farmers and people in drought-prone regions. In both of those examples, it is extremely important to conserve water whenever possible. Most people are not aware of how much water they use in a day and the problems it causes for the world at large. If that lack of knowledge is possessed among farmers, there is significant damage happening through ignorance. In a study done by the International Journal of River Basin Management, farmers were surveyed on their knowledge of water use and its economic and environmental consequences. There was a very significant connection between “farmers perception of water use” (Zhao et al., 2020) and economic prioritization. The need for survival outweighs their ability to care about different water regulating policies. Therefore, it is important to understand if a new method of water regulation, most importantly in agriculture, would make an unmeasurable difference. The development of smart irrigation systems could change the world.
here are many people that should care about the use of water. As stated above, water is a limiting resource. There are many factors that are affecting the availability of water. These include population growth, a warming climate, and urban development (Ierna, 2021). It is now even more important for farmers to limit their water. I think the farmers need to care most about these sensors to regulate moisture and temperature. It is thought that nearly 85% of the freshwater resources are going to farming and irrigation (Boursianis et al., 2021). What will happen if there is a major drought? Without adequate water, the crops will likely die. The farmers are the first stakeholders that should be interested in moisture sensors. This will help them control where exactly in their fields need water and conserve water as much as possible, especially in times of drought. The next level of people I would say that need to pay attention to this would be consumers. Though they are not the ones that would be directly utilizing the product, they can still reap the benefits as better water management can produce better crops and not waste water.
