THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW & OTHER STORIES by Washington Irving - $10
Sleepy Hollow, inK., 2024
“A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land and to pervade the very atmosphere”
– Washington Irving, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
Selected works from Washington Irving's classic The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. collection (from the 1848 G.P. Putnam edition) include his most popular and enduring tales originally serialized from 1819-20: "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," along with a lesser known but equally interesting ghost story, "The Spectre Bridegroom," and two odd essays verging on the fantastical: "The Mutability of Literature" and "The Art of Book-Making."
This slim yet gift-worthy "best of" volume, produced in that very real yet mythic village of Sleepy Hollow by publisher Sleepy Hollow, inK., begins with a contemporary introduction by local author Krista Madsen, and ends with blank "sketch pages,” inviting the reader's own musings and drawings. The vibrant cover design celebrates two female artists from the second wave of the Hudson River School movement.
PRAISE:
"Beautiful, intelligent collection. Krista Madsen has put together a beautiful new edition of Washington Irving's stories, led of course by the Headless Horseman. She has provided a smart and witty introduction. Everytime I read Irving I see something new. For Irving Nerds, and we should all be Irving Nerds, this is a book to Geek Out!"
"Great introduction to Irving and Hudson River School. Lovely edition of five of Irving's short works given modern relevance by the author's introduction and the parallels with the little-known female artists of the Hudson River School."
"Great collection. So much fun to read these stories."
"New twist on an old classic. Beautiful graphics on the cover."
There are certain half-dreaming moods of mind in which we naturally steal away from noise and glare and seek some quiet haunt, where we may indulge our reveries and build our air castles undisturbed.
-Washington Irving, “The Mutability of Literature"
From the introduction by Krista Madsen:
My life is bound on both ends by the enduring influence of Washington Irving (1783-1859) and his multi-layered stories about storytelling. From my rural outpost weekend escape in the idyllic Catskills—the setting of Rip Van Winkle’s twenty-year nap, now rich with public art of an elfin man with a walking stick and extensive beard—I descend my mountain reverie to return to diurnal life in extraordinary Sleepy Hollow, Hudson River-centric home of the Headless Horseman.
In 2017, I had the honor of writing the introduction for the Knickerbocker Classics edition of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories, produced just in time for the 200th anniversary festivities of the first serial run of these stories in New York City, from 1819-1820. That book is out of print, but it occurred to me that Irving’s oeuvre is old enough to be considered public domain material—I could reproduce it myself.
I am pleased to present here—now under the umbrella of my publishing imprint and DBA name as a “wordsmithery,” Sleepy Hollow, inK.—a more curated collection, a smaller subset of what was originally published as The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.
