Land for Sale in Ellenabeich by Mike Shaw
Land for Sale in Ellenabeich by Mike Shaw
A February notice in the Oban Times caused quite a stir among residents of the Slate Islands, particularly among those living in the Easdale area. Under a very attractive photograph, a map of Ellenabeich was richly tinted in pink, to identify the land being offered for sale. The text of the particulars overflowed with enthusiasm: describing attractions within the subjects for sale, including: “multiple landing stages for small vessels, a car parking area, a freshwater lochan and multiple parcels of land suitable for a variety of alternative uses”.
This land has been offered for sale in the past. Indeed, many years ago the community purchased the land that allowed creation of the small sports field and, some years later, the construction of the new hall and its car park. This previous experience prompted The Slate Islands Trust to meet with members of the Community Council and suggest that they lead the effort to steer this matter to a conclusion that would meet the interests of all concerned. Your Trust asked to be kept informed and undertook to support the Community Council as long as they adequately safeguard the heritage Ellenabeich.
We know that detailed discussions have since taken place with the sellers, and with several official bodies who could be of interest in achieving outcomes satisfactory to both conservation and local wishes. The Community Council have also done their best to keep everyone informed.
