NEW RESEARCH
We are indebted to Bill Flentje, who contacted us in April. He has provided much information on the targetry used at the old Volunteers' rifle range above Ellenabeich. He also found documentary evidence that a similar range existed on the Isle of Luing, built for the Luing section of the Easdale Volunteer Artillery.
Our thanks to the Luing History Group for pinpointing where the range is and for finding the remains of a Ralston mechanical target.
We have updated the Rifle Range page on the Trust's website.

In 1942 a sea mine was washed ashore at Ellenabeich before exploding. A number of dwellings were damaged, as the local police report explains. Shrapnel from the mine survives to this day.
