The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, School of Agriculture, Njala University, Njala Campus, has three key mandates namely; Teaching, Research, and Community Outreach Services. The three arms of the Extension Department provide interactive educational services and practical field expediencies to Staff, Students, Farmers and other Value Chain Actors. The Extension Outreach Services give accessible technical support and specialized extension service delivery approaches to Students, community people and Farmer Based Organizations in the University environment and Sierra Leone at large. The Department is partnering with other organizations/Institutions such as; the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS), Local and International NGOs, Research and Educational Institutions and other extension stakeholders in and out of Sierra Leone.

The University environment and Sierra Leone at large
1. Build competencies for field staff and Students on Gender and Nutrition related issues at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.
2. Dissemination of sustainable Gender and Nutrition sensitive information to rural household communities in Sierra Leone.
3. Scale-up the consumption of local nutrition sensitive crops and discourage farmers from negative food myth believes
4. Introduced Gender, Nutrition and Youth issues in Agricultural extension Curriculum at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.
5. Increase capacity development of Extension Service providers, Students and farmers through Seminars and workshops, developing and producing field guides, Extension materials and Tools, conducting sensitization meetings, Field visits, forming farmer based organizations (FBOs) and also establishment of demonstration plots.
6. Collaborate with other departments, FBOs, NGOs, Ministry of Agriculture and other Educational and Research Institutions to influencing their activities towards Gender and Nutrition sensitive approaches.
