Principal Investigator

Semechah Lui - Assistant Professor of Applied Geophysics

Semechah received her Ph.D. in Geophysics from the California Institute of Technology and B.S. in Geological Sciences from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining UTM in 2018, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at U of Toronto.

Postdoctoral Fellows

SeongJu Jeong - Roger E. Deane Postdoctoral Scholar

SeongJu Jeong received his PhD in Geophysics from Southern Methodist University in 2021. His research interests include ground motion analysis and source discrimination between multiple events. He is currently working on lower stress drop or slow earthquakes observed in induced earthquakes.

William Sheng Hua Ye - Postdoctoral fellow (co-supervisor: Prof. R. Paul Young)

William received his PhD in Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto in 2021. His research interests include simulating laboratory earthquake with discrete element model (DEM), as well as combining the application of numerical simulations and machine learning in seismology. He is currently working on a dynamic weakening model that can improve fault rupture behaviours in Particle Flow Code (PFC), a DEM code.

Graduate Students

Riddhi Mandal - Ph.D. candidate  (5th year)

Riddhi received a B.S. and M.S. in Earth Sciences from IISER Kolkata. His interests are geared towards earthquake source modeling using kinematic and numerical models. He is currently working on using numerical earthquake models to look at the interaction of aseismic and seismic motions on faults, with anthropogenic effects included.

Xinyu Tan - Ph.D. candidate  (4th year)

Xinyu received his B.S. in petroleum engineering from China University of Petroleum (East China) and M.S. in mining engineering from Virginia Tech. His general research interest is on the problem of induced seismicity caused by fluid injection in the oil and gas industry such as hydraulic fracturing and wastewater disposal.

Hoi Leung Pun - Ph.D. candidate (2nd year)

Hoi Leung has been part of our group since 2020 as an ROP student. He received his B.S. in the Earth Science at UTM in 2022 and stayed with us to continue his Ph.D. studies. He is interested in the triggering mechanisms of earthquakes, particularly foreshock-mainshock interactions.
