Shetlandic in a Parallel Universe
This is a Shetlandic translation, from the original Danish and English translation, of Zinklars Vise, a Norwegian poem written by Edvard Storm in 1781 to commemorate the battle of Kringen of 1612, in which Norwegian farmers defeated a band of Scottish mercenaries marching through Norway to join the Swedish army. It is written in Danish - the official language of Norway at the time - and is performed (as Sinklars Vísa) as one of the Faroese ring dances. It suggests the sort of traditional ballad, or výsek, that would have existed in Shetland Norn. Neither the translation nor the original poem is historically accurate.
