Teresas abstract:
Students beyond the early grades must understand, express, and learn from challenging informational texts. Strategy instruction is supported by a strong body of research evidence, and is well suited to the expertise and resources of school SLPs. This presentation will address SLP strategy intervention with a focus on expository discourse. Topics will include the varieties of strategies and terminology, selecting teachable strategies, teaching through spoken interactions around written texts, finding and modifying texts, connecting to the classroom, and moving strategies from SLP teaching tools toward student learning tools. An expository strategy intervention called Sketch and Speak will be presented. In a simple recursive process that transforms, retrieves, expands, and rehearses ideas using visual and written note-taking combined with oral formulation and practice, students gain ownership of the words and concepts of informational texts. The research base to date for Sketch and Speak will be presented, along with how to use it as both an integrated set of SLP teaching strategies and as a flexible set of student learning strategies.
