A Counter Notification is a formal request you submit to Google if your content (like a Google Site) has been removed or suspended due to a copyright claim, but you believe that the removal was a mistake or you have the right to use the content.
Use a counter notification if:
You believe your content was wrongly taken down.
You have authorization or fair use rights to the disputed content.
You want Google to reinstate your site or content.
Review the Takedown Notice
Check the email or message from Google explaining why your content was removed. It will include details of the copyright claim.
Prepare Your Counter Notification
Your counter notice must include:
Your full legal name and contact information (address, phone number, email).
Identification of the removed content (URL or description).
A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief the content was removed due to mistake or misidentification.
Consent to jurisdiction of your local federal court or, if outside the U.S., an appropriate jurisdiction.
Your physical or electronic signature.
Submit the Counter Notification to Google
Use Google’s Counter Notification web form or follow the instructions in your removal notice.
Google forwards your counter notification to the party who filed the original claim.
They have 10–14 business days to file a lawsuit to keep the content offline.
If no lawsuit is filed, Google restores your content.
**WARNING:** Misusing the counter notification process—such as submitting false statements or claims you don’t truly own—can have serious legal consequences including perjury charges and civil penalties. Only file a counter notification if you are certain you have the right to the disputed content.
Consider consulting a legal professional before submitting a counter notification.
Keep copies of all communications and documentation related to the dispute.
Use the process responsibly to protect your rights and respect others’ copyrights.
