A fan-made storytelling card game for three to six players, inspired by Dixit
Overview
Tidebound Dixit is a game of creativity, interpretation, and misdirection. Each round, one player becomes the Storyteller and gives a clue inspired by one of their cards. The other players attempt to confuse the group by submitting cards that also match the clue. Players then vote on which card they believe belonged to the Storyteller. The aim is to give clues that are neither too obvious nor too obscure.
Setup
Each player touches the scripted Dixit object.
The Dixit object will give each player six random cards. These can be added to the bottom of the players' screens.
Scores are tracked separately by the host, either on paper or within a notecard.
How to Play
1. Choose the Storyteller
One player is selected as the Storyteller for the round.
The Storyteller:
Looks through their six cards.
Chooses one card.
Gives a clue aloud in local chat or voice.
The clue may be:
A word
A phrase
A song lyric
A quotation
A sound
A poem title
Anything imaginative or suggestive
The clue should not be too obvious or impossible to guess.
All other players:
Choose one card from their hand that could match the clue.
Transfer the chosen card object to the Storyteller.
The Storyteller:
Rezzes all of the submitted cards (in their numerical order) in-world for everyone to see. If there are two identical cards, these are placed on top of each other and count as a single card.
Once all cards are displayed:
Every player except the Storyteller votes for the card they believe belongs to the Storyteller.
Players may not vote for their own card.
Voting is done:
In local chat
In order, clockwise, from the Storyteller
Scoring
OR
The Storyteller scores 0 points.
All other players score 2 points.
The Storyteller scores 3 points.
Each player who correctly guessed the Storyteller’s card scores 3 points.
Each player also gains:
1 point for every vote received on their submitted card (up to a maximum of 3 points)
End of the Round
After scoring:
All rezzed cards are deleted.
Players touch the scripted Dixit object again.
The Dixit object will give each player one new random card to replace the card that they have played.
A new Storyteller is chosen (clockwise from the previous story-teller) and the next round begins.
Winning the Game
The game continues until:
A player reaches the agreed winning score
(commonly 30 points)
OR
The group decides to end the session.
The player with the highest score wins.
When playing with only three players, voting choices can become too limited. To make the game more varied and unpredictable, each non-Storyteller player should submit two cards instead of one.
At the end of the round, once points have been awarded and the displayed cards have been deleted, players should touch the Dixit dealer twice in order to receive two replacement cards before the next round begins.
