Arion was celebrated throughout the ancient world as a gifted poet and musician whose songs could move the hearts of both people and gods alike.
Travelling from court to court, he earned great wealth through his remarkable skill with the lyre before setting sail across the sea to return home. As the voyage continued, the sailors aboard his ship became consumed by greed. Coveting the riches Arion carried with him, they plotted to steal his treasure and cast him into the sea.
When Arion realised their intention, he begged only for one final request. Before meeting his fate, he wished to sing once more. The sailors agreed.
Standing upon the deck in his finest robes, Arion took up his lyre and poured all his heart into a final song. His music drifted across the waves with such beauty that it enchanted every creature within hearing. Among those drawn to the melody was a great dolphin, which swam close beside the ship as though spellbound by the performance.
When the song had ended, Arion accepted his fate and leapt into the sea.
Before the waters could claim him, the dolphin rose beneath him, lifting the musician safely upon its back. Carrying him swiftly across the sparkling waves, the faithful creature bore Arion all the way to the shore, where he stepped safely onto dry land.
Some time later, the same ship reached port. Believing Arion had drowned, the sailors confidently claimed that they had no knowledge of what had become of him. Yet Arion soon appeared alive before them, revealing the truth of their treachery. The sailors' deception was exposed, and justice was carried out for their crimes.
From that day onward, the remarkable tale of Arion and the dolphin was remembered throughout the Roman world as a story of divine favour, the power of music, and the unexpected kindness that nature could show to those blessed by the gods. Even the creatures of the sea, it was said, could recognise beauty where wicked hearts could not.
