PROJECTS 2019


The projects below have been selected carefully by the partner universities and after being pitched by local organisations. Each project deals with subchallenges with regard to agro, industrial design, engineering, IT, business management and marketing. Students will be working on these projects in the most possible multidisciplinary setting, and in close collaboration with the local farmers and organisations.

The Bamboo case


LEADING UNIVERSITY: Saint Mary’s University (SM) in Bayombong, Nueva Vizkaya
LOCAL PARTNER: Buliao Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Quezon, Neuva Viskaya
CONTEXT: 300 members, production of BBQ-sticks for streetfood, made from bamboo harvested by individual farmers, there is a lot of waste material.
CHALLENGE: creating innovative bamboo products with less waste, create ways to produce (automatization), creating or adapting business model, enabling the members of the cooperative and the community to discover their potentials and to maximize their livelihood opportunities....

The Organic Fertilizer Case


LEADING UNIVERSITY: Isabela State University (ISU) in Echague, Isabela
LOCAL PARTNER: PAYO-Ga (Parents and Youth of Gamu) in Gamu, Isabela
CONTEXT: started as a youth organization, currently with a focus on the problems of farmers, since 1989 bio-organic fertilization as an answer to the mono-culture agriculture and chemical fertilization.
CHALLENGE: help the organisation to improve the packaging and propose ideas to add value to all the different products available in the organisation, propose cost efficient technologies, how to increase the macronutrient content of the organic fertilizer, finanancial management, adapting business model, ...

The Trading Center Case


LEADING UNIVERSITY: Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), Bayombong, Nueva Vizkaya
LOCAL PARTNER: Agrizkaya Cooperative Federation (ACF) in Bambang, Nueva Vizkaya
CONTEXT: this trading centre is currently a kind of bio-shop, selling a lot of local products.
CHALLENGE: students can work on a business model (to extend it with a gift shop - Pasalubong), on a technical aspect (packaging) and on IT (improve the website), B2C, upscaling from retail shop to wholesale being it perfectly located on the way to Manila?

The Aqua case


LEADING UNIVERSITY: Central Bicol State University (CBSU), Pili, Camarines Sur en ISU
LOCAL PARTNER: Cabanayan Masagana Small Water Irrigators Association (CMSWIS)
CONTEXT: because of the heat during the dry season the water in the water tanks heats up too much and the fish die.
CHALLENGE: in their ponds local fish farmers are able to culture Pangasius, but Pangasius is not yet popular to the consumers. Another challenge is the effect of climate change. During dry season, the temperature of the water in their ponds is increasing which causes fish kill. Could students develop low cost solutions to oxidize the water in order to avoid fish kill? or help the organisation developing new products from Pangasius?
