Indoor track season means focused training inside either Hopper Gymnasium or Cowles Fieldhouse. Athletes are split into groups based on event and have a practice daily that works around their class schedule. With workouts happening in close quarters, there’s a constant energy in the building, and a strong sense of camaraderie. The season is fast-paced and competitive, with weekend meets offering the chance to compete and improve each week.
Outdoor track season shifts training to Buxton stadium, where there is more space and more events. Practices are still organized by event group, but the team is all together outside which brings a fresh new energy. Each practice is still tailored and intentional. As the season moves forward, the focus sharpens toward conference, and top performers aim for national qualifying marks. It’s the final season of the year, and the one where everything comes together.
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a collegiate track athlete? Follow along with athlete Maddie Hays as she takes you through a day in her life on the track, in the classroom, and everywhere in between.
Off the track, a lot of time goes into building relationships and staying connected as a team. We eat meals together, hang out outside of practice, and make time for team bonding—whether it’s something planned or just a spontaneous get-together. Community service is also a big part of what we do, and there are always chances to get involved and give back. A lot of athletes are involved in campus life whether it’s clubs, greek life, or just showing up to support other teams. Academics are a priority, but there’s a strong support system to help manage everything.
There’s a place for everyone to get involved.
From academic groups, greek life, and service clubs to intramurals and special interest organizations, Simpson offers countless ways for students to get involved.
