It has been over 2 decades since I penned my first, and last, artist statement. But the time is at hand. Here is my truth in under 500 words:
Born in the East Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda, I grew up surrounded by vibrant culture and natural beauty, which deeply influenced my artistic journey. As a child, I balanced a love for coding, mathematics, and literature with a growing passion for drawing. At eight years old, I declared my ambition to become an artist after discovering the joy of creating perfectly proportioned paintings of human figures; all standing eight heads tall!
Early in my professional life, I nurtured my creativity through painting and sculpture while working with award-winning communication teams. However, as I transitioned into instructional design, my artistic pursuits took a backseat to other responsibilities. It wasn’t until a transformative week at a silent arts retreat in Baltimore that I reconnected with my creative spirit. Immersed in making watercolor paints, sketching, and molding polymer characters, I rediscovered the thrill of creation and the joy it brought to my life.
That experience inspired me to share my passion with others. I began volunteering at a local day center for adults with developmental disabilities, leading sound meditation sessions and teaching art classes. Together, we explored a variety of materials and techniques, from painting and printmaking to incorporating natural elements like plants and collage. This period of experimentation not only enriched my artistic practice but also deepened my understanding of the transformative power of art.
In recent years, I have engaged with a diverse community of creatives, learning from their perspectives and refining my own artistic focus. My work now centers on exploring identity, relationships, and the intersection of personal and collective experiences. Through portraiture, I examine subjects from multiple angles, using different media and techniques to uncover deeper truths about self-perception and societal roles.
Each piece I create is an exploration of light, color, contrast, and negative space, allowing me to intimately understand my subjects and their stories. My art is a celebration of individuality and a reflection on the shared human experience, rooted in my journey as a Caribbean woman, lifelong learner, and creator.

When teaching art, I combine instruction and production with the mindful meditative practice of sound bathing. The calm and perspective that immersive sound contributes to the art-making process is beyond measure.
