DxR Clinician is an all-inclusive computer patient simulation package, consisting of 1) prepared patient cases, 2) management tools for editing patient content, setting evaluation criteria, analyzing student records, and enriching the program with learning resources and content questions, and 3) optional authoring tools for developing new patient cases for delivery using the DxR Clinician case framework.
DxR Clinician software was developed in part to help medical educators quantify the clinical reasoning skills of healthcare profession students. The current method of observing and mentoring students during preclinical patient encounters and clinical clerkships provides considerable insight into the clinical reasoning process but does not provide any means of quantifying specific skills. DyR Clinician, on the other hand, is designed to monitor each decision the student makes during the "patient" encounter and to provide a report, illustrating the level of clinical reasoning he or she has demonstrated.
DxR Clinician found additional application when traditional teacher-centered methods of instructing healthcare professional students gave way to patient-centered, student-centered learning experiences. Under this newer approach, students working in small groups engage in problem-based or team-based learning activities using computer patient simulations and internet-delivered interactive educational content. DxR Clinician provides virtual patient cases that students can work up and then discuss in a group or classroom setting. Individual students who want or need more practice working up' patients with a number of different clinical problems can access these virtual patients at any time from any location with an Internet connection.
