The Basic Simulation Lab at the UKM Faculty of Medicine was established in 2019 in collaboration with the UKM Medical Education Department and the SIM @ UKM Committee under the SIM @ UKM Program: Learning Transformation Era of Education 4.0. The inauguration of the laboratory was completed by Prof. Dato Ir. Dr. Mohd Marzuki bin Mustafa, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and International Affairs on 18 October 2019.
There are 14 rooms comprising 35 procedures in the Basic Simulation Laboratory located on the 4th floor, Preclinical Building, Faculty of Medicine UKM designed to facilitate small group teaching sessions, supervised training sessions and even self-directed learning through modules and videos provided to users and students in particular. The rooms are equipped with a layout of equipment and furniture that reflects the clinical concept in addition to computer equipment. A total of 6 Medical Laboratory Technologists were deployed to operate the Basic Simulation Laboratory (Makmal Simulasi Asas) and Clinical Skills Laboratory (Makmal Skil Klinikal).
Students and lecturers can book and use the rooms according to their suitability and usage records and usage statistics are managed by the Medical Laboratory Technologist and monitored by the lecturer in charge from the UKM Medical Education Department. Students will practice relevant clinical procedures in the laboratory based on updated videos & modules on mannequins or equipment. Trained Medical Laboratory Technologists at MSA will provide technical assistance related to manikin & application to students if necessary. This Basic Simulation Laboratory is also used for the purpose of student assessment as well as examinations that use mannequins as an alternative to real patients.
Clinical Skills Learning Laboratory houses 8 rooms and is a teaching and learning module that has been enshrined under the UKM Medical Doctor Degree Undergraduate Program. The rooms also have the same layout as in the hospital ward in addition to having computer equipment and projectors. Small group teaching sessions, supervised training sessions as well as self-directed learning are conducted here. There is also a special room used for the periodic teaching process Simulated Patient under the auspices of the SP Unit of the UKM Medical Education Department. Students can use this room for physical examination learning on fellow students or on standard patients because these rooms are equipped with beds & equipment like in a hospital ward.
All Medical Laboratory Technologist (Juruteknologi Makmal Perubatan) support staff housed in the Basic Simulation Laboratory and Clinical Skills Laboratory have undergone a series of formal trainings including the Simulation Teaching for Technician / Technologist Workshop and the Simulation Teaching for Educator Workshop (ESSENTIAL). All MLT staff also attended technical skills sessions related to equipment and mannequins in the simulation laboratory by supplier companies to further strengthen the working and handling of equipment.
In addition to the general use of the laboratory by students of the Faculty of Medicine UKM, Basic Simulation Laboratory and Clinical Skills Laboratory are also used to carry out other activities related to undergraduate, postgraduate, academic and non-academic. It includes the involvement of students from international educational institutions.
