Today, we briefly planned the project we are going to do which is called Scarfie!

Scarfie is a two player game. You can play with your friends or your family members. You and your competitor have to take turns for rolling the die to move your characters. The die has six sides and the only numbers that are on each sides of the die are one and two. If you success at shooting the enemy with your attacking beam(it comes out straight, maximum 5 spaces), you win! The obstacles don't let the avatars/players go through and it blocks the beams. The computers will not show the obstacles. You need to memorize where the obstacles are placed. You need strategy an good memorization skills to win this game!

Today, we planned how Scarfie would work!
Today, we planned how Scarfie would work!
We decided to call the obstacles 'Zaryas' and the attacking beams 'ribbons'. We will make our game using the Makey Makey board. Our game board is going to be the size of 3 by 5, and you and your competitor will play for 10 minutes or less. You can move your avatar/player up, right, left, down, but you can't move it diagonal. Including what we just said, we made more rules and made solutions for the problems we noticed. Also, we discussed about the design of our game.

There are two pieces of programming done right now, the timer and the die. The timer has a time limit of 600 seconds. This means that you will have 600 seconds(10 minute) to play the game. The die has six sides. Three of the sides have one/1s on them, two of the sides have two/2s on them, and one of the side has three/3 on it. The players will move around by the numbers that shows up on the die.

Today we designed Scarfie with details.
Today we designed Scarfie with details.
We designed the 3 by 5 space board for our game using Scratch. Using a candy theme, each of us made different boards with our own ideas on what our candy themed world would look like. Also, we thought about what our avatars/players would look like. Hannah's avatar/player design is a cat, and Sierra's avatar/player design is a gummy bear.

Today we worked on programming our game, Scarfie and refined the rules of Scarfie.
Today we worked on programming our game, Scarfie and refined the rules of Scarfie.
Scarfie has three Zaryas, the obstacles. They are divided between three sections of the game board. The 3 blocks in the middle of the board is a power zone. If the die shows three, you can move your avatar like a chess horse piece from the power zone of the board. In order to fire your ribbon and kill the enemy, you must be next to the other player. If you roll higher than the amount of spaces that are there for you to use, you loose your turn and you are not able to move. You cannot land on the other player's starting point.

Today we worked on programming Scarfie more.
Today we worked on programming Scarfie more.
We worked on moving our game pieces, discussed how we will program it, and created more sprites such as arrows and, in Sierra's case, the Zaryas. We learned the proper useage of the various tools in Scratch programming such as list, variables, motion, and broadcast.

For homework, we watched a video about lists and more blocks. Today, Hannah used the video about more blocks as a reference and used the more blocks for the first time to make the Scarfie more advanced. She is planning on using the lists next class. Sierra spent her entire class time figuring out how to move the player away from the Zarya instead of stepping on it. We both were suffering with problems, but we hope that it will eventually be solved.

Today, we worked on spotting flaws on our programming scripts.

Today was (and probably will be) the most exhausting day ever. We both spent the entire two hours programming one or two blocks. Hannah had to remove one block called "marshie" and replace it with "position". Now, she is facing another problem, but she can do it now that the major problem is solved. Cheer up! Sierra was focused on perfecting how the game pieces interact with the Zaryas. She wanted the Zaryas to repel the pieces and succeeded.

We will only have a week more to finish our programming and it is looking really good! Today Hannah finished programming the outcomes that the Zaryas would bring on the game by using a list and her main avatar Marshie can move based on the number of the die. Sierra started programming her border. We started figuring out how our middle pieces by looking at chess games on scratch.

Sierra finished her coding for how her pieces move and how the board responds to the pieces. She also started on her ribbons programming. Hannah coded her pieces and thought of coding in a different way and will be done by next week!

Today, we finished up our programming and started on our board design. We also learned about the Maker Faire and some of the cool and interesting projects that went into it in the last couple of years. In seeing this we feel inspired to make our design more interesting and interactive. We'll have to meet up more often before and after spring break because we will not be able to work with each other in that time period. Over the weekend, Hannah deleted all of her coding and tried to do her coding in an entirely different way. Fortunately, it worked! Now, she only has to work on her Zaryas and then she is done! Hooray for Hannah!!!

Today we used MakeyMakey to design our first board prototype. We decided on a color pallet of our board and also found some fun founts to use. The paper board we have designed today works. We only need to smooth out a few more graphic mistakes we may have made in order for our board to look as smooth and pleasing to the human eye as possible.
