Silvia Gazzola

I am an Associate Professor at the Dipartimento di Matematica, Università di Pisa. 

My research focuses on inverse problems, i.e., those problems that recover quantities of interest from indirect measurements thereof. Inverse problems arise in many applications, for instance when reconstructing a medical image from a medical scan. I devise new efficient algorithms for large-scale inverse problems that exploit tools at the interface of numerical linear algebra and optimization. 

Before joining Pisa, I worked at the University of Bath, Department of Mathematical Sciences, as a Reader (2023-24), Senior Lecturer (2022-23) and Lecturer (2016-22); there I was also serving as an Executive Member of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa). I held a PostDoc position in the BASP group at Heriot-Watt University (2015-16). I earned a PhD in Computational Mathematics at the University of Padova in 2014.
