The initiative led by SILAY Director Artemio C. Andaya, featured during a documentary by a TV network in Barangay Salvacion, Jose Panganiban, showcases a meaningful and community-centered approach to environmental education through the program called “BangKarunungan.” This initiative focuses on bringing knowledge directly to children in coastal communities, particularly those who are closely connected to the marine environment in their daily lives. “BangKarunungan,” a combination of the words “bangka” (boat) and “karunungan” (knowledge), serves as a floating classroom that introduces young learners to the importance of marine ecosystems. Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and storytelling, children are taught how the ocean supports livelihoods, provides food, and maintains ecological balance. More importantly, the program emphasizes the role of every individual—regardless of age—in protecting and sustaining these natural resources. During the documentary, it was highlighted how the initiative not only educates but also inspires children to become stewards of the environment. They learn practical ways to care for marine life, such as proper waste disposal, avoiding destructive fishing practices, and participating in coastal clean-up efforts. By making education accessible and engaging, “BangKarunungan” helps instill a sense of responsibility and pride among the youth in preserving their community’s natural heritage. The initiative reflects Director Andaya’s vision of empowering communities through knowledge, ensuring that future generations are equipped to protect the marine environment that sustains them.
