Science, whether you know it or not, is a BIG part of your life! You have a lot of physical intuition just from living- like if you watch a cat push something off a table, you know it's going to fall down due to gravity. You may not specifically think that, but if it started floating up, THAT'D BE WEIRD!!! If someone kicks or throws a ball toward you, you know to duck or move because the impact of that ball is going to hurt! See? You're already a natural physicist! I think it's important as a professional scientist that one should share their expertise in a way that the average person can not only understand but enjoy! Science and math didn't have to have been your "best" subjects in school to continue to learn and explore more about the universe we live in - plus, you might find it's REALLY FUN when you start to pursue the topics you're interested in the most! I started the TikTok @giveSierraSpace to help you do just that. It's a place where you can ask questions and learn in a fun and relaxed way. Plus, I try to include humor and my goofiness in the videos. I hope you find just as much joy in them as I do! (see some of my favorite TikToks below)
Why is Science Communication Important?
Scientists work very hard to understand the world we live in and often help make it a better place. We have velcro because NASA needed an easy way to secure things on the rocket in space, and right now, you're reading this on your phone or computer which wouldn't be possible without the work of engineers, programmers, and other scientists. Science communication is also important to make well-informed decisions about our health (which we saw in great detail during the pandemic), climate, and even politics. Scientists, backed by public opinion, have the power to change government funding and regulation, which quite directly, affects every single person. So, it is the responsibility of the scientist to communicate and the public's responsibility to stay informed. I like to nicely sum that last sentence up by saying "science is for everyone!"
