John completed a 10-week undergraduate summer research internship advised by me at Michigan State University in 2025 as a rising junior. He presented his project, “Simulating Hydrogen-Triggered X-ray Bursts on Slowly Accreting Neutron Stars,” as his first research poster at the Mid-Michigan Symposium. He learned how to use and run MESA on MSU's high-performance computing center to simulate X-ray bursts. It was also his first research experience, which he said he really enjoyed even though research is a lot different in practice than he expected!
I participate in the Stellar Mentoring initiative at MSU by mentoring two junior graduate students through monthly advising meetings. My mentoring focuses on professional development, research navigation, and work-life balance within graduate school. I also enjoy having a post-doc mentor, especially in navigating the end of grad school and applying to post-doctoral fellowships.
