What is Literature ?

At the beginning of my study, I believed that literature was simply made up of poems, novels, and plays written for entertainment or artistic pleasure. I thought literature belonged only to the world of imagination and emotions. However, after studying literature for two years, my understanding has completely transformed. Literature is no longer just stories or verses for me; it has become a vast field that connects science, art, history, philosophy, psychology, and society into one meaningful human expression.

Today, I understand literature as the written record of human experience. It is the place where thoughts, struggles, discoveries, and dreams are shaped into language. Literature reflects how people think, how they live, and how they respond to the world around them. It does not remain confined to beauty or creativity alone; it also deals with truth, reason, politics, ethics, and knowledge.

Through literature, science and art meet. Scientific ideas appear in literary texts through themes such as time, technology, evolution, disease, and environment. At the same time, art gives science emotion and meaning by showing how these ideas affect human life. For example, stories and poems do not merely explain facts; they show the fear of war, the pain of poverty, the hope of discovery, and the impact of climate change on ordinary people. In this way, literature becomes a bridge between objective knowledge and human feeling.

Literature also teaches me that language is not only a tool for communication but a powerful medium for shaping thought. Literature allows me to travel across time and space and understand people who lived in completely different conditions from mine.

From my present understanding, literature is not separate from life; it is life written down with depth and meaning. It contains:

Therefore, literature is no longer just a subject for me. It is a way of seeing the world. It helps me interpret reality, understand humanity, and connect knowledge with emotion. In conclusion, after two years of learning, I define literature as an interdisciplinary space where science, art, and human experience meet through language.
